What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
What is EFT?
Emotionally Focused Therapy is an evidenced based and researched therapeutic modality created by Dr. Sue Johnson. EFT is an attachment based therapy that looks at the bonds between partners. The process of EFT helps couples uncover negative cycles of interaction. These cycles can include the cold shoulder, silence and emotional withdraw, as well as, picking fights, screaming, blaming and name calling. Many times it can be all of the above in a short window of time!
We will process, in real time, what happens when this negative cycle takes over your relationship. My couples have shared with me that when their cycle takes over they feel lonely, hurt, cast away, ignored, unloved and like they can’t do anything right. This may sound familiar.
We work -in a safe environment -to explore how the cycle effects the relationship. We learn how to identify how we feel and start sending clear messages to our partner. We will work towards creating new bonds. That is EFT 101!
Who do you relate to more? The one doing the singing or the one being sung to? Are you stuck in silence afraid to say something wrong? Are you crying out for your partner to respond to you? Are you feeling like you may be ready to give up? We all long for bonding! However, our negative cycle that protects us from getting hurt can also keep us feeling lonely.
